Happy International Women's Day!

Last updated 3/3/2022 at 11:10am

Happy International Women’s Day (IWD), dear women! March 8 is a day of recognition of women’s equal rights. It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. According to the United Nations, the first milestone in the U.S. occurred in 1848, when women wanted to speak at anti-slavery events and ended up holding a women’s rights convention in New York.

In the early 1900s, the first day of solidarity for women in the struggle for equal rights and emancipation was a “Woman’s Day” organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City, from Feb. 28, 1909, through 1913.

In August 1910, the trade unionist of the German Social Democracy, Clara Zetkin, proposed the establishment of an International Conference Day for Women’s Equality and Emancipation at a conference in Copenhagen. About 100 participants from 17 countries supported the idea unanimously. The holiday was associated with far-left movements and governments until its adoption by the global feminist movement in the late 1960s. IWD became a mainstream international holiday following its adoption by the United Nations in 1977.

The British Women’s Social and Political Union in 1908 proposed colors as a symbol of the struggle for equality. Purple stands for justice and dignity, green for hope, and white for purity.

The U.S. Department of State said the United States celebrates International Women’s Day every year by hosting the International Woman of Courage (IWOC) Award ceremony. Since the inception of this award in March 2007, the Department of State has recognized more the 155 women from over 75 countries. The recipients are women who demonstrate exceptional courage and leadership while advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment – often at significant personal risk and sacrifice. The awardees are invited to Washington D.C to receive their awards from the First Lady and Secretary of State in a gala ceremony.

The Fountain Valley News team wishes Happy Women’s Day to all the incredible women of Fountain, Security, Widefield and Fort Carson! Shine on – not just today, but every day!
