Hundreds of homes in Security were evacuated for hours on May 12 as a grass fire raged. Officials said the catalytic converter of a sheriff's deputy vehicle ignited the grass during an investigation of a suspicious vehicle near Alturas Drive and Cresta Loma, south of Milton Proby Parkway. Soon, the flames crossed Powers Boulevard and rushed toward Amazon and the Colorado Springs Airport. However, firefighters were able to control the spread and no buildings were damaged. The helicopter pictured above made many trips to and from Big Johnson Reservoir for water that was dumped on the fire.
