Black Hills Energy Efficiency Program

Small businesses, multifamily properties can take advantage

A Black Hills Energy program aims to save its small business natural gas customers money and improve energy efficiency. Perks include free equipment and installation for qualifying participants.

With the Small Business Direct Install (SBDI) Program, small businesses and multifamily housing properties are eligible for increased incentives not available to non-participants.

Chris Walters of Franklin Energy, a contractor Black Hills is using to implement the program in Colorado, said SBDI is a great way to reduce natural gas and water consumption and save money. Walters explained the two-part program.

“Our Direct Install part involves us providing a number of free products that can be installed for free by my team or the products can be given to the property for them to install themselves,” he said. “This includes things like programmable thermostats, new showerheads, pipe insulation, etc. … “This is all paid for by BHE, so there is absolutely no money out of pocket, or any additional fees that will be added to the user's bill.”

The second part is the incentive program.

“This is designed to incentivize the purchase of energy-efficient heating equipment, controls, and insulation, as well as the maintenance of heating equipment,” he said. “The incentives come in the form of cash rebates, and I've been giving out a lot of money for things that people are already doing anyways.”

This program can be used for existing properties or new construction.

“We also have a program where we recruit contractors and educate them about the energy efficiency program, so they know how to meet all of the requirements to qualify for the rebates, so that they can pass on the knowledge to their customers and save them some money while providing better equipment and services,” Walters said.

Here are a few reasons to consider energy-efficient upgrades, according to Black Hills Energy:

• Improves the look for your business

• Can increase customer comfort

• Saves money for your bottom line

To get started, complete this online interest form (https://www.blackhillsenergy.com/form/small-business-direct-install-pr) or complete this participation form (https://www.blackhillsenergy.com/sites/blackhillsenergy.com/files/sbdi_program_participation_form.pdf) and email [email protected] to sign up for your free energy assessment. Or, call 888-391-8702. A qualified energy advisor will visit your location and provide you with a report of recommended energy-efficient upgrades, including available incentives.

Next is the free direct install. Your business may qualify for free screw-in LEDs, faucet aerators or a pre-rinse sprayer. The energy advisor will install these for free.

Then, you can work with a registered trade ally to make additional upgrades. Your energy advisor will refer you to someone to move forward with the recommended energy-efficient upgrades. All trade allies have received training from Black Hills Energy employees and will provide you with set pricing for the recommended upgrades. Your trade ally may also recommend other comfort and safety improvements to benefit your business. Franklin Energy offers 12-month, 0-percent financing for qualifying customers and projects.

The energy advisor will provide support from the start of the assessment to the completion of the project. Energy advisors help with paperwork completion, project scope reviews and trade ally referral. And they’ll answer all your questions throughout the process.

For a limited time, Black Hills Energy customers in the company’s Colorado Gas territory can receive an incentive bonus for completing projects through the Small Business Direct Install Program.
