A crash in Fountain early Saturday afternoon left a motorcyclist dead after he illegally attempted to pass another vehicle on the shoulder, Fountain Police said.
Fountain Police and Fire responded to reports of a traffic accident in the area of Squirrel Creek Road and Shumway Road around 1:20 p.m. Upon officers' arrival, it was determined that the motorcyclist was deceased on scene. The Fountain Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called out and took over the investigation.
Police said they learned the motorcyclist, who was wearing no helmet, was traveling west on Squirrel Creek Road and was attempting to illegally pass another vehicle on the right shoulder, when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. The name of the victim will not be released until the coroner can make a positive identification and next of kin is notified.
There were no other injuries and no other vehicles involved in the crash. The road was closed for about three hours while authorities investigated.
Preliminary information indicated alcohol was not a factor in the crash; however, speed was.
"It should also be noted the motorcycle was listed as stolen from Colorado Springs," a statement from FPD said.
