Wag of the Week

Last updated 7/5/2022 at 2:23pm

Hi folks, AARF still has Buddy and Paris. They really need homes. Please call for more information even if you are simply able to foster at this time. Some rescues have the fostering family take the pet around to adoption fairs or prospective adopter's homes, but it isn't always the case. At times, AARF has let the pup stay in the home with adopters visiting and even bringing their own pets to see how they get along.

A difficult topic I'm dealing with right now (again) is "when is it time to say goodbye?" I have a nearly 19-year-old cat I got from Teller County Regional Animal Shelter in 2004. He was a year old, and actually adopted me, vs. the other way around. Now he has health problems, has for awhile, and things are getting expensive. He cannot really groom anymore, and our vet had to shave off a lot of mats and went ahead and bathed him. I was shocked to see how thin he had gotten. We are working with thyroid medication, but the other thing is that he doesn't digest well, refuses the kidney diet dry or canned, so we try the next best thing: food for elderly cats, because, of course, the vet just wants him eating. We've had some luck mixing the canned food with softened kibble (his usual) and sometimes with rice. Because he's so thin and frail, I've been snuggling with him a lot – he had gotten to where he didn't want to, but now does. He likes when I rock him. It's like he's the kitten I never got to know. He eats well and does his business well. So he is not ready to leave us. It's wise to be a little prepared for the expense of having elderly pets. I have four other animals myself. But of course, it's all worth it.

AARF holds adoption fairs at PetSmart on Powers Saturdays 11-2: 2965 N New Center Pt., Colorado Springs, CO 80922. HOWEVER, SOMETIMES THE FAIR IS ON A SUNDAY.
