New I-25 shift, nighttime closures coming
Last updated 7/13/2022 at 10:06am
As part of the work being performed by the Colorado Department of Transportation and SEMA Construction, motorists will encounter nighttime work Thursday and Friday night with alternating right and left lane closures on northbound and southbound I-25 between CO 16/Mesa Ridge Parkway and Santa Fe Avenue. These closures are required to construct the crossover for the completion of the traffic switch from Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue.
There will be daytime mobile closures on Wednesday for guardrail repair and alternating left and right lane closures for shoulder work on northbound and southbound I-25 in this same stretch.
Traffic has been temporarily shifted southbound I-25 easterly to the newly constructed inside lanes between South Academy Boulevard and CO 16/Mesa Ridge Parkway.
The upcoming southbound traffic shift for CO 16 to Santa Fe Avenue is expected to occur in late July 2022. Traffic on I-25 is head-to-head, separated by temporary barrier with 11 ft. lanes and 2 ft. shoulders. Speed limit reduction to 55 MPH between MP 127 and MP 135.5.
This traffic switch will be in place through early 2023 to allow for the construction of the new southbound lanes, with concrete that will provide increased stability and durability. The new traffic configuration will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Motorists are urged to use extra caution while traveling in the new traffic pattern. Fines will be doubled through the construction zone.
As an added safety measure, CDOT has built four temporary emergency pull-off areas on the northbound side and two emergency pull-off areas on the southbound side that drivers can use if necessary.
The project team has implemented text messaging to alert the public of construction related traffic impacts or when an incident is causing traffic delays. If you drive on I-25 between South Colorado Springs and Fountain, register for Alerts: Text MAMSIP to 888-970-9665
