Despite several signs around Blue Stem Open Space announcing the presence of rattlesnakes and other animals, the trails are popular with area residents who enjoy bicycle rides and walks around the Big Johnson Reservoir.

A 6-year-old boy reportedly has died as a result of a rattlesnake bite sustained at Bluestem Prairie Open Space along Goldfield Road by Big Johnson Reservoir.

Community members are taking the opportunity to remind each other to exercise extreme caution in outdoor areas such as this, as rattlesnakes and other animals are known to reside here.

Friends say the incident occurred July 5, while the boy was enjoying a bike ride with family members. He got off his bike during a water break and ran slightly ahead on the trail, where the snake bite happened. Despite immediate efforts to get him medical attention, the bite made swift, irreparable damage to his little body.
