Theater group holding auditions for new production at nature centers

Two years ago, when COVID-19 had most locales shut down, a theater group brought an outdoor play to the trails of the Fountain Creek Nature Center.

Now, the group plans to return to the great outdoors with a new production, "Ghost Fish: Legend of the Lake." Auditions are open now through Aug. 8.

Theatre Across Borders is accepting video auditions from anyone age 10 and up. Positions are available for actors, puppeteers, dancers, singers, and more. All roles are paid.

Directed by Melissa O'Rear and Katy Williams, organizers refer to the play as a "theatre hike." Theatre hikes are staged along a 1-mile loop at Fountain Creek and Bear Creek Nature Centers. Performers repeat a single scene, outdoors, 12 times per day as small audiences (15 people per group) hike the trail. The script is interactive and targeted to young families.

The previous theatre hike, "Magic of the Marsh," sold out all 36 shows in summer 2020.

This year's play is about a legend of a fish that makes wishes come true. To find it, you must join the circus, swim with a mermaid and escape a sea monster. "Ghost Fish" blends puppetry, dance and silly surprises for kids ages 3 and up. The performance is somewhat interactive, with guest encouraged to "make a wish" and "find the fish."

Shows will be staged at the nature centers morning-to-afternoon Saturdays, Oct. 8, 15 and 22.

Readthrough and first walkthrough on Aug. 27 at Fountain Creek Nature Center, 320 Peppergrass Ln.

Rehearsals start Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Theatre Across Borders, 917 Prairie Road, evenings and weekends.

Submit audition video, headshot, resume and rehearsal conflict form by Monday, Aug. 8, to [email protected]

Video must include a 1-minute monologue (or fish story), plus at least one talent: puppetry, juggling, song, dance, musical instrument, close-up magic, color guard (flag/rifle), stage fighting, etc.

In lieu of a monologue, you may also recite "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"

Cast will be notified by Aug. 14.
