Members of the Security Lions Club and a small army of volunteers comprised of Widefield School District 3 teachers, counselors, principals, superintendents and others willing to give of their time and energy gathered Saturday morning, Aug. 13 at the Fountain Walmart for the club's annual KidSpree. The Lions have conducted this event for many years now, helping local families by sponsoring children and taking them back-to-school shopping for shoes, clothes and more. Club members distributed "Lion for a Day" t-shirts to the many volunteers who then accompanied local children through the store to gather their items.
According to Security Lions Club Secretary Chuck Larson who spearheaded the event, a total of 118 kids were assisted and $13,500+ was spent, averaging about $125 per child.
"We can't say enough to express our gratitude to all the D3 volunteers who came out to support this important program," Larson said. "I also want to be sure to thank everyone who has donated to make this possible."
If you would like to make a donation to support the Lions for next year's event or for their other programs, you can send a contribution to Security Lions Club, PO Box 5191, Security, CO 80931.
Larson also shared that the club's next fundraiser (in addition to BINGO games they sponsor at Carefree BINGO in Colorado Springs on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m.) will be during the upcoming Balloon Classic in Colorado Springs at Memorial Park, Sept. 3-5. He said the Lions will be manning the parking lot of the medical building at 175 S. Union Blvd. as well as the Oddfellows Hall at 575 S. Union Blvd. nearby.
"Come out and see us, and enjoy the balloon festival too," he added.
Larson invites anyone interested in joining the Lions Club to please call him at 719-660-2334.
