If you have some prize-winners growing in your garden, submit one to the Fountain Valley News annual zucchini contest. The contest opens Wednesday, Sept. 7, and will run through Friday, Sept. 16.
This year's contest features prizes from local businesses, including some great items courtesy of Spencer's Lawn & Garden Center in Fountain (4720 Center Valley Drive, Fountain). http://spencersgardens.com/
We also have awesome gift certificates from Dairy Queen Grill & Chill (7010 S. U.S. Hwy 85-87). https://www.dairyqueen.com/en-us/locations/co/fountain/7010-s-hwy-85-87/3155/
Each year we invite community members to bring in their best picks for the honor of heaviest or longest zucchini. Last year we started a new category: Most Unique or Unusual Zucchini. This will be for odd-shaped entries, or ones with unusual stories.
Bring your zucchini to the Fountain Valley News office at 120 E. Ohio Ave. to be weighed and measured. Office hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday.
Contact us with any questions at [email protected] or 719-382-5611. Contest winners will be announced in late September.
For over 20 years, this newspaper has proudly hosted the Zucchini Contest. It began as an annual event hosted by a local garden center; after it went out of business, this paper decided to pick up the tradition.
Our thanks to Rayco Automotive (218 S. Santa Fe Ave., Fountain) for use of their scale every year!
