A local teen battling bone cancer will celebrate his 16th birthday just before having his leg amputated, and his family is inviting the entire community to help him have a big birthday bash.

Aiden Cooper, whose story was featured in the Aug. 3 article "Local teen facing tough road with bone cancer," (https://www.epcan.com/story/2022/08/03/news/local-teen-facing-tough-road-with-bone-cancer/12631.html) will turn 16 on Oct. 9. Surgery is scheduled for the following day.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1-4 p.m. the VFW Post 6461 in Fountain is hosting a big Halloween-themed birthday party, complete with live music from the bands Die Like Bothans and BoxState Rootz, food trucks, and other festivities. Guests are encouraged to dress up. VFW Post 6461 is located at 753 S. Santa Fe Ave. in Fountain.

Aiden has stage 4 Osteosarcoma. He was supposed to join his classmates at Mesa Ridge High School as a sophomore this fall, but the cancer and intense related treatments prevented him from attending this year.

An active member of JROTC, Aiden's lifelong dream was to become a U.S. Marine. However, that goal is no longer possible.

The VFW has helped with numerous fundraisers since Aiden's diagnosis, and other community members have rallied to help provide meals to the Cooper family.
