Our officers deserve nothing less than our support on 2B

As I read a story in The Gazette yesterday about a lockdown at Harrison High School due to fears of violence in that school I remind myself that I have a lot to be thankful for when I remember that our children in our local schools are protected by a resource officer and in some cases a resource dog like our Golden Retriever Boomer. I am extra thankful having three kids with special needs at three separate schools this year. Golden Retriever Boomer has played an extra special role in my daughter's success this year and her first year in middle school. She suffers from Autism, ADHD, severe anxiety, and several other conditions. She is able to escape all of this when Boomer is around. She knows that our SRO's are there to help her if she ever needs anything or does not feel safe. It goes even further than that. Just the small things like fire drills, shelter in place, and active shooter drills. This creates so much stress and anxiety for our kids and the SRO's along with our teachers do a fantastic job making sure our kids feel safe and help guide them through this necessary trainings.

Those officers give their all to protect our children, our community. With the increases in crime in our city and county our first responders are stretched to the breaking point, short staffed and often get little appreciation for the job they do to protect us every day. They report to work to protect the citizens and property of our community and they are never guaranteed to come home safe.

It is time we, our community, fund the resources they need. Make sure that our schools continue to have school resource officers and heroes like Boomer. For that reason, I am going to Vote YES on the public safety issue 2B.

Our officers deserve nothing less than our support because when we call they always show up. When our children need an extra hand, support, role model, hug, encouragement, a laugh, or Heaven forbid, protection from danger within our school, they will not have to wait for responders because they are already there. I know my family has benefited from our SRO's more than I could ever explain in these short word. Our kids and our community deserve the best and voting Yes on 2B is exactly what we need.

Thank you,

Trisha Mathill, Fountain resident
