All three local high school marching bands went to the Colorado Bandmasters Association state competition at the Air Force Academy on Saturday.

Fountain-Fort Carson (p.12) and Mesa Ridge (p. 13) both made it to finals. FFC, under the direction of Mr. Josh Race, finished 5th in 5A. Mesa Ridge, under the direction of Mr. Phil Olivas, finished 7th in 4A.

The bands start learning their show shortly after school finishes in May. Long, hot summers in band camp, with the first parts of the show being presented at their football team's home opener. It takes a community to support a competition marching band. From the assistants to the battery, the pit, the band and the color guard, to the many parents it takes to load the equipment, get it to the competition site, have food and drink for the band after the performance, maintain the props and just get it out on the field for competition. It's a huge undertaking by many, many people, for about 10 minutes of show time – culminating in the CBA State Championships.
