State of the Region Address

Last updated 11/8/2022 at 2:32pm | View PDF

Good day. I hope all are looking forward to Veterans Day later this week. I enjoyed this past weekend's Veterans Day Parade in Colorado Springs and was pleased to see that my alma mater, the Air Force Academy and its football team won back the "Commander-in-Chief's" Trophy that Saturday as well. Also, this week is the county's annual public update at the "State of the Region." And lastly, thanks to all those that voted in this past Tuesday's election.

First, our El Paso County Board of County Commissioners Chair, Stan VanderWerf, will deliver the annual State of the Region address with the theme "Together Towards Tomorrow" to a gathering of business representatives, non-profit leaders, and engaged residents during a luncheon hosted by the Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC. Commissioner VanderWerf will discuss the county's successes and highlight the work the county is doing to strengthen the region's economy, workforce, and infrastructure. He will share about how we are working with our regional partners to address challenges in our community and enhance the quality of life of our residents.

The Annual State of the Region is on Thursday, November 10, at 11:30 and you can watch it on live stream on El Paso County's channel and social media platforms. To watch, visit and click on the TV, Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube icons on the top right of the page. We will also link a recording of the State of the Region soon after in case you'd like to view it at a later date.

Also, this Friday is Veterans Day and I hope all will take time to thank those you know that have worked on behalf of our Country with their honorable military service. From, "This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars." Today, we celebrate all veterans on this special day. I want to thank all in our community who have served our great nation. God bless you and your families.

Finally, the Board of El Paso County Commissioners is seeking community-minded citizen volunteers to serve on the Board of Adjustment. The Board of Adjustment hears and decides on issues of physical variances related to the county zoning code. Variance requests may include changes to dimensions, structural location, bulk limitations, or other development requirements. Applications for the open position are due by November 18, 2022.
