Traffic switch planned on southbound Interstate-25 between South Academy Boulevard and Mesa Ridge Parkway

A new lane shift on I-25 in Fountain is coming up on Monday, Dec. 19, specifically southbound traffic between South Academy Boulevard and South Santa Fe Avenue.

The Colorado Department of Transportation and SEMA Construction announced that on Monday night, southbound traffic will shift to the newly constructed southbound lanes between South Academy Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue. In order for construction crews to perform the traffic switch, there will be alternating right- and left-lane closures on southbound I-25 between Mile Posts 127 to 131; southbound I-25 lanes will be closed at South Academy Boulevard, and traffic will utilize ramps at that location to continue south on I-25

The southbound traffic switch configuration on I-25 between South Academy and Santa Fe will be in place through April 2023 to allow for the construction of the new northbound travel lanes with concrete that will increase stability and durability, according to CDOT.

The new traffic configuration will be in place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Normal working hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. The speed limit in this area has been reduced to 55 MPH. Slight traffic delays are expected and motorists are urged to use extra caution while traveling in the new traffic pattern. Fines will be double through the construction zone.

A Courtesy Patrol will be driving the work zone and will respond to incidents when notified. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday and holidays. Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

This project -- Military Access, Mobility & Safety Improvement Project (MAMSIP) -- has four primary areas of focus in the Pikes Peak region, all of which are strategically important in the movement of personnel and equipment between nationally significant military facilities. The project comprises four components on highway and road corridors and will help sustain economic growth in this nationally significant region.

The two components that have been substantially completed are:

• Colorado Highway 94: Safety and efficiency improvements with the addition of passing lanes, turn lanes, road widening and the installation of fiber on CO 94, which connects Schriever Space Force Base (SFB) with Peterson Space Force Base (SFB) and central Colorado Springs.

• Charter Oak Ranch Road: Road reconstruction generating safety and efficiency improvements for Charter Oak Ranch Rd., the entry point to Fort Carson's Gate 19 from the I-25 Corridor.
