On Nov. 30, more than 350 DECA students from across El Paso County competed at the DECA District 8 Leadership Conference held at Fountain-Fort Carson High School. Students had their sights set on qualifying for the Colorado DECA state conference happening in February at the Broadmoor. FFCHS DECA students did very well with over 50 state qualifiers and 19 district champions.
Students competed in 20-plus events in areas such as Apparel and Accessories, Restaurant Management, Hospitality, Travel and Tourism, Sports and Entertainment, Professional Sales, and much more. The competition tested students' skills in how to handle different business/marketing situations in a role-play scenario or a business presentation. Students also took a 100-question test to assess their business knowledge.
DECA, an Association of Marketing Students, is a Co-Curricular Career and Technical Student Organization, which promotes leadership development and student achievement. New data indicates that Colorado 10th graders who completed Career and Technical Education programs performed better on standardized tests, and reading and math tests than those who did not. The data was compiled by the Career and Technical Education division of the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).
